Eligibility criteria for Bachelor Programmes
–B.Des is offered in six different specialisations. This course spans four years. The total number of seats available for the B.Des programme is 30. The specialisations offered are:
- Fashion Design
- Leather Design
- Knitwear Design
- Fashion Communication
- Textile Design
- Accessory Design
–B.FTech is the institute’s four-year full-time program in Apparel Technology. This program has an intake of 30 students. Candidates must have qualified in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Eligibility criteria for Master Programmes
NIFT offers three different masters programmes that cover a wide range of specialisations from technology to management. All these three programmes span three years. They are:
- M.Des. (Master of Design)
- M.F.M. (Master of Fashion Management)
- M.FTech. (Master of Fashion Technology)
- What exams must a candidate clear to get into NIFT?
Every year, the admissions for NIFT’s bachelors and masters programmes commence in May. Candidates who are looking to join these courses can apply online. Admission to these degrees is solely determined by the academic performance and results of the NIFT entrance exam. This exam consists of three components. They are:
- Creative Ability Test (CAT)
- General Ability Test (GAT)
- Situation Test/Group Discussion
Once this exam is cracked, admission is granted to candidates post a personal interview.
Tips to crack the NIFT exam
Here are some of the top tips to crack the NIFT exam:
- Practice is the key to success. Try to sketch almost everything that you see or imagine.
- Flip through numerous newspapers, websites, magazines and social media to draw inspiration.
- Get ideas from different advertisements, banners, posters and other media.
- Try to not use an eraser whilst practising. Make mistakes. It will help your lines be clean and crisp.
- Understand the importance of detailing wherever necessary. For instance, focus on the face of a figure or an outfit.
- Master the art of human illustration. Concentrate on form and proportions.
- Be proficient with calligraphy or typography which will help in designing banners and posters. It is equally important to show versatility in terms of style and lettering.
- Focus only on the relevant and accurate syllabus of the NIFT entrance exam.
During the exam:
- Invest in quality colour pencils and choose something that has at least 24 shades.
- It is wise to have a plan in place before attempting the questions. Start with the simpler questions like t-shirt or logo design. Attempt the more complex ones later.
- Manage your time efficiently to finish the paper within the stipulated time.
